Well, that's almost sad. It helps him keep from being completely exasperated with her. "But you see that's my point," he says. "You can know other things. That is a possibility for you. You can develop - curiosity, interest. Surely."

She can't just be this. How frightfully dull and meaningless an existence, or so it seems to him.

They're at the building now, and they enter as though it is the most natural thing in the world, passing the concierge without a glance. "Rent will be taken care of by me," he says as they approach the elevator; no need to thank him, it's easy enough and it's a small price to pay, so to speak, to keep her close. He doesn't trust her to get too far. "And I've made sure no one here will, erm - notice your appearance." Not that she couldn't pass for human in a pinch, but this will certainly make everything cleaner.
