It sounds more than a little patronizing and he cannot summon the energy to snap at that response and perhaps that is preferred because she continues and he may not be admittedly excellent at perceiving the varied inflections of pitch and tone because it appears that Greta is having significant difficulties maintaining her own relatively calm demeanor, and so he does not address it and he leans forward and closes his eyes and runs another hand through his hair, finding a bracing regularity in the motion.
