"Plenty of candy," Johnny adds, raising his voice right back at him. He empties the can of soup into the pot and then turns to Gabe, gesturing at him with a wooden spoon. "Be nice to Mako. She doesn't have to be here."

He starts the soup on a low heat and gives it an occasional stir.

"You can't have candy right now," he says. "Sugar'll make you feel way worse. Trust me."
