"Anything it would do to him it'd do to me too," he replies, his voice low and hesitant. The rift would kill them. He knows that if he ever pushes himself into the rift again, it won't just chew him up and throw him out again. It will crush him.

He can see that it's a blow for Johnny, that anything like this happened without him knowing, that Gabriel would even consider so risky a move while Johnny is here.

Even Gabriel doesn't really understand it beyond the pain he felt in that moment and the intense need to do something about it. Now, he realizes that bringing Lucifer along for the ride had been less about wanting angelic chatter in his mind again and more a way to make sure Johnny would be safe after he was gone.
