[Open] From the Bowery to Saint Mark's

New York city is a good place for a girl of Aly's talents. So many people are constantly rushing from place to place or else gawping at the sights that it's very easy for a nimble-fingered thing like her to relieve them of a wallet here or there. Credit cards, she finds, are particularly fun and she's made some very exciting purchases at stores with such fun names as Trash & Vaudeville and Search & Destroy. Once she's assembled a better wardrobe, Aly quickly changes and stuffs her plainer clothes into the bottom of a shopping bag. It won't do to exult her victory while wearing clothes that a sharp eye in a crowd might remember.

Partially out of playfulness, Aly chooses a loud and colorful outfit. It's not the strangest thing she's seen in the area called the East Village but it's certainly eye catching enough that someone might easily be distracted into watching her clothes rather than her face. And all her knives are concealed within her many layers though to any onlookers, she's just relaxing at a bar seat eating chipped potatoes with sambal sauce.

She's adjusting to the changes in her Sight, learning to recognize the rolling heat lines that indicate someone who's passed through the rift and the starbursts that tell her someone is what Daine has explained as an alien. Plying those skills, she glances around the tiny eatery.

"I assume there'd be something, but okay. I can ask questions." He settles in next to her and props a foot up against the pew in front of them. "Your universe isn't like this one, I take it. Just how involved are your gods?" He'd gotten the impression that, if people were around in the temples every day, chances are that the gods are a little more hands on as well.

[aly_brighteyes]

"And what questions could I have for someone like you?" She asks, quavering just so, and letting an implied Are you going to hurt me? linger in the air.

"Well it depends on if a god's taken a liking to you. Like how Alanna the Lioness is the Great Mother Goddess' own."

[has_a_horn]

He's not going to address the question, or the implied question. He's already on his guard around her, but now he's trying to figure out just what sort of impression she's trying to give him. He's not quite buying the damsel in distress vibe.

"And has a God ever taken a liking to you?" The implied here being would you like one to?

[aly_brighteyes]

"I've no interest in inviting that kind of trouble." Not again, that's for certain. But if he's going to play that game, Aly twiddles her thumbs and looks downcast.

"From what I hear though, us mortals don't get much of a say in whether or not we're a god's chosen."

[has_a_horn]

"No perks on that sort of thing?" He lifts his elbows up onto the back of the pew and looks up into the church. "I'd think the favor of a god would come in handy."

[aly_brighteyes]

"I suppose that depends on the god, doesn't it?" Aly asks, raising an eyebrow at Gabriel. What sort of god is he?

[has_a_horn]

He tips his head to smile cheekily at her. He's spent a long time as a trickster. It'd be a shame to give up the game here immediately. "What would you do, if you were a god?"

[aly_brighteyes]

"Meddle," Aly replies. "Isn't that what all gods do? Even when they're helping, they're meddling."

[has_a_horn]

He shrugs. "Would you rather they fucked off into the vacuum of space?" Whoops, look who has some daddy issues. In his universe, God has been absent for a long time, and he doesn't really look favorably on gods who abandon humanity.

[aly_brighteyes]

"Oh certainly not. I'm rather glad they're more involved than this one," Aly cants her head to the front of the church. "It seems a little hard to trust a god who's never home."

[has_a_horn]

"You don't know the half of it." And that's all that he's going to say about that one. The less he delves into the issues that make him feel guilty and angry, the better. Instead, he shifts the focus to her.

"So what with the innocent act?" He'd been a little surprised by the sudden nervous position she had taken earlier, and hey, ya can't kid a kidder. He knew it for the mask it is. "What's strapped to your leg, a knife or a gun?"

[aly_brighteyes]

Oh. He's sharp. It's nice to have a challenge, though apparently he's only noticed the leg knife and not the five others on her person.

Aly looks at him with the slightest pout and shrugs. "Doesn't everyone act innocent?"

"That's not really an answer to either of my questions, is it?" He quirks an eyebrow at her and refrains from answering her question. If they get going into a weird theoretical half-serious discussion, they'll never get anywhere either of them wants to go.

[aly_brighteyes]

"Well, it just seems to me," Aly chews on her thumbnail, breaking off eye contact. "If you're going to get by in such a big place, you do better by acting like you've done nothing wrong and keep your head down."

[has_a_horn]

He shrugs. "That's only good up to a point. Then you start looking like bait. What you're looking for is a good middle ground between damsel in distress and Xena: Warrior Princess."

[aly_brighteyes]

People think less of a damsel, expecting her to keep her head down and her sewing neat and thinking she'll never hear anything, but Aly doesn't say that. She just shrugs instead.

"Then I try not to go where people are fishing."

[has_a_horn]

"In a city? People fish everywhere." He gives her an incredulous glance. "That thing strapped to your leg might help though, if you know how to use it." To be fair, he'd only noticed that one because she'd adjusted it, but he's assuming there's more weaponry hidden somewhere on her if she's got one item on her already. "What else have ya got? Please tell me ninja stars."

[aly_brighteyes]

"If I were trying not to be bait, why would I tell you what I can or can't do?" she points out with all the sensibility of a schoolgirl.

[has_a_horn]

"Why did you want to talk to me?" Once again, he's going to avoid the weird rhetorical question she's giving him and cut to what he's really interested in.

[aly_brighteyes]

Aly smiles slightly and raises an eyebrow, "You spoke to me first, Gabriel. And thus far it's been an interesting conversation."

[has_a_horn]

"Oh? What's so interesting about me? If you don't mind my asking." He matches her eyebrow raise and grins. "I mean, the sense of humor and dashing good looks are a given, but I've got a lot on the table. It's always interesting to see what sticks." Modesty? What's that?

[aly_brighteyes]

"If you have to ask, then you're being coy," Aly replies, employing much of the same quality.

[has_a_horn]

"Fine then." If she wants more direct, he can do direct. "I know you're some sort of psychic. How much can you see?"

[aly_brighteyes]

That is far from what Aly is expecting to hear, but rather than alarm she begins to laugh. "A what? Is that your word for those with the Gift? Certainly, I'm no such thing."

[has_a_horn]

He's betting that this is a big fat denial of being caught out, but he's willing to see if she actually has a point to make here. "What would you call it, then?"
